Eyeglass prescriptions in East Rockaway

Decoding the eyeglass prescription you get from your East Rockaway eye shop involves learning what various letters, numbers and symbols mean. However, it’ll be worth it if the next time you receive a prescription you can understand it. In order to do so, you’ll need to be able to understand and decode the following: OD, OS. OU, sphere, cylinder, axis, prism, add and PD. The OD and OS are Latin abbreviations that indicate which eye the prescription is referring to. OD stands for oculus dextrus, which means the right eye. OS stands for oculus sinister which means the left eye. If OU is on the prescription, it stands for oculus unitas, which means both eyes. The Sphere indicates the lens power that’s needed to correct your vision. It’s measured in diopters (D). The further away from zero, the more vision correction is needed. If there’s a plus sign (+) in front of the number, you’re farsighted (have difficulty seeing nearby objects). If there’s a minus sign (-) in front of the number, it means that you’re nearsighted (you have difficulty seeing objects that are far away). Cylinder indicates if there is astigmatism present in your eyes as well as the amount. If the column is blank, there no astigmatism or not enough to require vision correction. Prism numbers are not usually seen on the prescription since it is for uncommon eye alignment problems. “Add” are numbers that refer to the powers needed to correct presbyopia. PD stands for pupillary distance, which is the distance between the centers of each of the pupils. It’s a very important number that’s needed to properly fit lenses.
